Establishing an Environment for Learning and Excellence
Change Your Words --- Change Your Mindset! Bulletin Board
My mentor teacher and I put this bulletin board together outside of our classroom for our students to view while they wait to enter class each day. The purpose of the bulletin board is to help our students understand that how we choose to approach our learning is often exactly what we get out of our learning. Am I being negative when I stumble while learning a concept? Do I give up easily? Do I make excuses? Or do I think about my experiences as an opportunity to gain information, modify my understanding, and rise to my best ability? Am I striving for excellence?
We all fall and make mistakes, but how do we react to that fall? I
want my students to understand that their reactions are in their power to
change, just as the words or thoughts they use and allow into their brains are
in their power. We have introduced this bulletin board to our students
and asked them to take a moment to examine its words while they wait for class.
Next week, we will take time to gather around the board and discuss it in
more detail with our students, inviting their thoughts and what they may gain
from changing their words in order to change their mindset. Our goal is
to help students see themselves and their learning as valuable, and to ensure
that we all view ourselves as constant learners, not begrudging ourselves that
process through negative words.
